The “Fundación Amigos del Niño con Leucemia y Cáncer” (FANLYC) held their annual relay this year, last Saturday and Sunday 21 and 22. Its purpose, as always, was to benefit people that are battling cancer. The “Relevo por la Vida”, or Relay for Life, was held in the Causeway, in a beautiful trail – and let’s not forget to mention that it lasted 24 hours, with people actually running for 24 hours straight.
I volunteered at a booth to help Alvaro Gomez, a boy from Veraguas with leukemia. Besides, I ran with my family in order to help and stay fit. The cool thing about events like these is that they are for a good cause and also promote health and wellness by making people active. When people run with others, they feel motivated and are more likely to do it, especially in an environment that is very accepting.
I went when the sun was at its highest – so I can’t imagine how it must’ve filled later on. Regardless, there were all types of people: people with pets, mothers with their children on strollers etc. No one was deterred by the sun and everyone seemed to be in such a great mood. So much, that at the end of the 24 hours, counting the regions of Panama, Azuero and Chiriqui, 83,881 laps were run, raising a total of $419,405 for FANLYC!
Running should also be fashionable, and for that I wore long sport leggings with a floral fringe on each side, a yellow shirt and grey and pink shoes. Last but not least, I wore super cute neon yellow, button earrings, a fuschia bow (that you can’t tell I have on) and pink lipstick.
The event was clearly organized and well thought out, plus there was an amazing and inspirational atmosphere which everyone portrayed by actively donating and participating in the relay, and visiting the booths from multiple businesses, organizations and groups in Panama.
There were all sorts of treats, snacks and items to buy. Some included delicious healthy snacks from FitSeed Panama!
I had always wanted to participate in a marathon/walkathan/race and never really got around to doing it. I was really excited about it and it was definitely a beautiful experience that I want to repeat, especially since it was for a good cause.
If you haven’t participated, hope to see you next year! ❤
